How We Save Energy

To save energy, our schools have to take one energy-saving measures by posting a reminder in every classroom, laboratory, staff room and library. This goal is made as to remind students of the importance of energy conservation on this planet. This also is one way to reduce ozone depletion.
We manage to decrease the usage of energy. How? As we can see the students are really committed to save the energy, as usual the fans and lights are not turn off when there is no student in class but now, when they are leaving the class they discipline themselves to switch off the light and fans. This practice is carried out by all of  the school community.

Picture below shows one way we save energy :

Our BP My Science Board

We posted this notice board to expose the green issue and on how to conserve energy. We also post about our green activities to the public so they are attracted to join us in saving planet earth. We use recycled item to decorate the board such as old magazine cut-out, used box and some leaves. This decoration makes the board user-friendly and looks nice. This board is located at the Midpoint where most of the students passed by. The reason we put the board at that sport is because the student who passes by will surely read the article on the board. We hope the student will be alert about the green news. We frequently update our notice so the students know what happens about the green news. Most of the students are hostelites so they do not really know about the green things happen around the globe.

Tips for saving energy & our planet

One of the quickest and easiest ways to become a responsible citizen of the Earth is to focus on saving energy in your daily life. Whether you are a young environmentalist or just looking for ways to help save the planet, you can be a part of the solution rather than part of the problem.

Electricity

In addition to turning lights off when you arenot in a room, unplug electronics. Don't make it a hassle , but if you are going away for a weekend or taking a vacation ,unplug your computer and electronics equipment. And you don't have to be trapped in a blackout to use candles. Instead of switching on a lamp ,light some candles at night. If you do have to use light bulbs , buy "coiled" CFL (compact fluorescent light) bulbs or those that advertise for their eco-friendly design. They may cost a little more initiallym but they save your money over the life of the bulb.

Commuting

One of teh most enviromentally unsound forms of energy use is motor vehicles. Some commuters have no choice but to drive their cars to work, but biking is an excellent comuting option, if possible. Biking is self-sufficient, which means the only energy required is that of the user. Plus, it helps you get into better physical shape. If you cannot ride a bicycle to work, try to use it for trips around town. hybrid cars are better for the enviromnet than most other vehicles. Their batteries temporarily turn off when stopped, and they use less gas than other vehicles. If you want to save energy but still drive a car, go with a hybrid.

Water

When brushing your teeth, don't let the water run down the sink. Turn on the water only when you need to rinse the brush. Try to take quick shower, rather than lingering in the hot water. And the less hot water use, the more energy and money you will save on heating. Cold showers may even be rejuvenating. If you have an ice cube machine in your freezer, remember to turn it off when you have an adequate supply of ice. You can also save a lot of running water by replacing your regular hand-washing after going to bathroom with hand sanitizer dispensers.

Akibat Kerakusan Manusia

One of Activity Towards Saving Energy

Date : 24.7.2011
Venue : SMTKL FIELD
Time : 7.30 a.m-11.00a.m
Participation : Form 5 and 4

This activity is about cooking basic foods in the woods. We cooked rice in drinking can and in bamboo. We coiled the bread using a tree branch and grilled it. We also cooked eggs that was covered in clay and put them in glowing firewood. To start the cooking, firstly, we dig a deep hole and put firewoods in there and let it burn. Then we put all the to-be-cooked-food in the hole. We enjoyed this activity.

Usage of Recycle Items

We're So Enjoying This!

We're Done!

This is how the backwood cooking is done. This activity does not require any gas or electrical energy. So, this activity help us to save energy and also decrease the carbon emission. This kind of activity should be exposed to all students as a method of survival. They can apply this lesson in an imperil condition. This is one of the outdoor activity which will increase the awareness of saving energy.

Tip Bitz #1

Folding a Shirt Using Used Cardboard/ Box

It's simple, neat and easy especially for those who doesn't have time. This brilliant invention is suitable for teenagers nowadays and for hostel lites  like us who doesn't seem have time fold our shirts or just too lazy to do it! All we need is a few cardboards, cellophane tape and a box cutter. Go and have a try! It may help your life. GO GREEN and PRACTICE 3R!

# We would like to try this invention and we'll post comments from our friends about it.

"How We Would Spend the Winning Money"

Five thousand ringgit is a lot of money for school kids like us. If we win, planning how to use the money would be our priority. We have discussed with our teachers and we have come up with four activities how we would spend the winning money.

First and foremost, we would expand our interest on the program ‘Go green & save the world’ to much younger generation. We planned to give a special demonstration and talk to a selected kindergarten children the importance of saving energy and reduce carbon emission. In this way we can promote positive attitude towards taking care of our earth at a very young age. For this occasion we need to spend approximately RM1000 for the activities as well as a lot of food and prizes to give away to capture their attention and heart.

Secondly, we would like to spend the money on buying a set of computer for our school. A complete set with printer would cost about RM2000. The usage of this computer would be mainly for students to browse activities or information on saving energy or the world so that we could produce bulletins about the matter periodically. Though we do have computers in school but they are insufficient and we do not have any access to the school computers at night or in the evening. With this computer, we can have more students to participate not only to write but they could also make movies. In this way we hope that more students would open their mind in the understanding of saving energy to save our world.

As a token of appreciation to the school, we would donate RM1000 to the school to carry out school programmes. We are aware that without the support from the school our project would not be successful.

Last but not least we would like to treat ourselves after all the hardwork and the dedication that we have been through especially to our teachers who were behind our success. We may go for lunch to a hotel or some good restaurants to treat ourselves..

We hope that we would win and are able to carry out the activities that we have planned.

Thank you.

Ways to Save Mother Earth

1. Don’t allow your children to free those colorful balloons in mid air. Teach your children not to release these balloons. For balloons that escaped the grasps of your children that will get into oceans and seas will be mistaken as yummy jellyfish by sea turtles. Sea turtles take a lot of years to mature and unfortunately some of them got killed by eating balloons or plastic bags. Sea turtles are part of a delicate cycle and if their population is affected other species of marine creatures will also be under threat.

2. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Make it a habit to reduce the things we need or consume. Purchase only things that we only need and eat only what you can. Let us do our share and not be part of the problem or should we say part of the garbage problem. Reuse all the things that can still be repaired/fixed or those things that are still okay.
Recycle things to conserve our resources, collect old newspapers, books, magazines, used papers, bottles (plastic and glass), and any other things that you could sell in junkyards. There is money in garbage and at the same time we’re doing our part in recycling process.

3. Be kind to trees. As much as possible use forests products and timber very well with optimum efficiency. You may use the back of coupons, use pencils until it become as small as possible, and don’t play with matches. Try to get involved in tree planting in your local conservation program. This could be fun as trees can give us added oxygen, shades for people and a refuge to different insects and birds.

4. Broken scientific apparatus like thermometer, barometers, manometers, sphygmanometers, and float valves and other things that have mercury in it should be disposed properly. Avoid throwing this in rivers for mercury is toxic and poisonous.

5. Minimize the use refrigerators, foam blowers, solvents, aerosol spray propellants, fire extinguishers, and chemical reagents for these contains chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) that are responsible to the climate change and depletion of our precious ozone layer. Do not burn plastic please this habit is also harmful to our ozone layer.

6. Do not keep exotic and endangered animals. These animals are intended to be in the wild not as mere decorations to your home or as pets or playthings.

7. Educate our children, friends and even our local community about the harmful effects of dynamite fishing, illegal logging, animal poaching, over reliance to wood products and other environmental issues.

8. Do not even bother to try eating exotic and endangered animals for they are not intended to be part of human’s diet. Let the other predatory animal do the stalking and eating (hehehe) you’re not fit to be a lion. One of the most badly hit from this human hunger for delicious foods are the sharks (shark fin soup), sturgeon (sturgeon roes - caviar- are valued for their great taste and one of the most prized eats in the world), snakes, sea turtles and many other animals.

9. Do not patronize things (coats, purse, belt, etc.) that are made up of an endangered animal or animal part (like skin, fur, bones, tusks, antlers )

10. Be responsible for your garbage, dispose them properly. Also try to use segregation scheme with your trashes, separate those that are decomposable from those that are not. You may utilize a compost pit to house all of your organic trashes and eventually use this as your fertilizer for your backyard garden or to your plants.

11. Do the traditional way of helping to conserve our environment by virtue of avoiding smoke-belching, saving electrical energy by employing tips (like regular cleaning of our bulb and fluorescent light in our home, use only appliances when needed, avoiding dripping of water from our faucets, and reporting any case of broken water pipelines to local government).

12. Support any environmental conservation in your community, you may give some donations if this does not bother you to support their cause. You may also join them in their information dissemination drive and campaign as well. You may also do things that can benefit our environment. If you're living in nearby beaches try putting old tires in the sea, this will serve as sanctuary for fishes to lay their eggs and for a place to hide from predators. You may have some vegetation (vegetables, trees or ornamental plants) in your own backyard, for extra oxygen in your area.

13. Support and visit eco tours near you, these may promote awareness about the importance of ecology to your children, relative and friends.

14. When visiting any tourism site/protected parks, please be responsible with your trashes as much as possible adhere to the rules and regulations of the park even if no one is looking at you.

15. Learn how to appreciate mother nature and her gifts to mankind and support any environmental campaigns that will help nurture and protect the only planet we live in.

Trip to Pagoh, Johor Darul Ta'Zim

Masa: 30 Julai 2011
Tempat: Taman Herba Nasuha, Pagoh, Johor Darul Takzim

Solar Boats

Solar Powered Boats

Solar powered boats get their energy from the sun.  Using electric motors and storage batteries charged by solar panels and photovoltaic cells, solar powered boats can significantly reduce or eliminate their use of fossil fuels.  Solar boats are uniquely suited to transform light energy into movement. Environmentally friendly solar energy is an energy efficient way to power commercial oceangoing vessels as well as leisure boats.

Solar powered boats - Solar panels for power

Solar panels are solar systems that produce electricity directly from sunlight. Solar panels produce clean, reliable electricity without consuming fossil fuels. Solar panel systems are an excellent way to generate energy in remote locations (the oceans) that are not connected to the electric grid.

What are the benefits of solar panels?

1.)  Solar panels are highly reliable and easy to maintain. Solar panels have no moving parts, so visual checks and servicing are enough to keep systems up and running. Solar panels are built to withstand hail impact, high wind, and freeze-thaw cycles. Solar panel systems can produce power in all types of weather. On partly cloudy days, they produce as much as 80% of their potential energy. Even on extremely cloudy days, they can still produce about 25% of their maximum output.

2.)  Virtually no environmental impact. Solar panel systems burn no fuel and have no moving parts. They are clean and silent, producing no atmospheric emissions or greenhouse gases that are harmful to the earth

3.)  Modular and flexible in terms of size and applications. Solar panel systems can be built to any size in response to the energy needs at hand. They can be enlarged or moved easily.

Hijau

Hijau
Bumi yang tiada rimba
Seumpama hamba
Dia dicemar manusia
Yang jahil ketawa

Bumi yang tiada udara
Bagai tiada nyawa
Pasti hilang suatu hari
Tanpa disedari

Bumi tanpa lautan
Akan kehausan
Pasti lambat laun hilang
Duniaku yang malang

Dewasa ini kita saling merayakan
Kejayaan yang akhirnya membinasakan
Apalah gunanya kematangan fikiran
Bila dijiwa kita masih lagi muda dan mentah
Ku lihat hijau

Bumiku yang kian pudar
Siapa yang melihat
Di kala kita tersedar
Mungkinkah terlewat

Korupsi, oppressi, obsessi diri
Polussi, depressi di bumi kini

Oo... anok-anok
Tok leh meghaso mandi laok
Bersaing main ghama-ghama

Keno make asak hok biso, weh
Pase maknusio
Seghemo bendo-bendo di dunio
Tok leh tahe
Sapa bilo-bilo

Penyanyi & Lirik : Zainal Abidin

Kesan-kesan hujan asid

1. Tumbuh-tumbuhan
- Menyebabkan perubahan komposisi bahan organik dalam tanah kerana kandungan nutrien
yang diperlukan oleh tumbuh-tumbuhan akan terhakis .
- Mengancam mikro organisma dalam tanah .
- Jejaskan proses pereputan dan penguraian bangkai haiwan dan tumbuh-tumbuhan .
- Musnahkan tisu daun dan mereputkan akar tumbuh-tumbuhan .
- Menyebabkan kerosakan hutan dan hasil tanaman .

2.Kerosakan bangunan
- Hujan asid merosakkan bangunan lama.
