History

Sekolah Menengah Teknik Kuala Lumpur is the oldest technical school in Malaysia. It was set up in 1926 as The Trade School by Mr. Noel Leembruggen, an engineer, and Mr. Geary, a superintendent. The school was located in Jalan Kolam Ayer, Kuala Lumpur. Then, in 1934 the school’s name was changed to The Government Trade School.

The initial objective for setting up this school was to train technician for the Water Works Department, Electricity Department, Public Works Department and The Royal Air Force. The school trained only Malay students from the Federated Malay States of Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang. Occasionally, non-Malay students were also accepted, and the course of study spanned three years. The total number of students at that time was not more than 50. Studies included technical drawings, metal works and other academic subjects. A few years later, courses such as radio, electricity, plumbing and carpentry were introduced.  As the students were not fluent in the English Language, additional classes for English Language were held. Among the teachers then were Mr. Cherrington, who was a carpenter, Mr. Bill Speldewinde, an aeronautical engineer, Mr. Atkinson, Mr. Rosario, electrical engineers and Mr. Daniel a radio communication worker.

The original structure of the school was only a single storey building. A few years before the Second World War, a double storey building was built. This building was used as classrooms until February 1942. When the Japanese invaded Malaya in 1942, the school building was used as a military base and hospital by the British.  Three years later, on 15 of August 1945, after the Japanese surrender, The English Royal Air Force (RAF) took over the school and made repairs and renamed it as The Junior Trade School. In 1947, the superintendent Mr Greary was replaced by Mr Tongoe who served until 1957.
Following the Razak Report 1956 the Junior Trade School  was renamed Technical Institute of Kuala Lumpur.  Six years later in 1962, the name was replaced with Sekolah Menengah Teknik Kuala Lumpur and is used until now. However, the location of the school had moved to Jalan Yaacob Latif in Bandar Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur.

The first school magazine The Technicians was produced in 1963. This machine-typed edition included many articles written in the English Language. In the early 70’s there were 38 teachers of which 15 were arts teachers, 9 science teachers and  8 technical teachers. Besides that, there were a number of volunteers from Japan, Canada, America and Germany who taught machine workshop, engineering science, Geometrical/Mechanical drawing and Physics. An additional block consisting of 4 classrooms and 2 science laboritories was built by the Education Ministry. The school also received donation of two Lathe Machines from the Japanese Overseas Cooperation Volunteers for the mechanical workshop.

In 1978, the pulse of the school consistted of 28 graduate teachers, 14 technical teachers and 22 non-academic staff.  The 22 acres and numerous facilities were able to support 700 students.  There was a library which had 5700 books, 2 mechanical workshops, 1 building workshop and 4 science laboratories.  At that time emphasis was on mechanical and building engineering. There were also 3 hostel blocks which could accommodate 300 students.
Among the principals who served in this school were En. Lai Nyen Fook (1957-1963), En. Panchalingan (1970-1971), En. Xavier Nathan (1972-1973), En. Mohd Suffian Mohd. Nazir (1973-1978), En.
